Move of the Day

Hip Escape to Recover Guard

The shrimp that keeps you from getting flattened — and puts you back on offense.

WhiteKids / Gray
  1. 01Frame: near-side forearm across their hip or neck, far-side hand posting on their shoulder or biceps — elbows tight, not wide.
  2. 02Look toward the far wall and bridge slightly into them to steal a half-inch of space.
  3. 03Explosively shrimp: drive off the near foot, scoot your hips away, and turn onto your side.
  4. 04Pull the bottom knee through the space you made and clamp it across their belt line.

Why it works for your belt

White is not Black. You pick a rank on signup and the move is chosen for that game — including Kids / Gray.

I finally have something to drill on my lunch break that matches where I actually am — not another black-belt YouTube rabbit hole.

The posture-break email made closed guard useful again. I stopped hugging and started attacking.

Short enough to read in the locker room. Specific enough that I used it that night.

Closed Guard Posture Break

Break their spine, own their hands, and start attacking instead of holding on.

  2. 02Get a cross-collar grip (four fingers in) and a same-side sleeve or wrist.

  2. 02Pin their far wrist to the mat with your same-side hand (thumb toward their head).

Why this exists

Instruction, not another highlight reel.

Justin Melia started BJJ Everyday because most BJJ content is either a 40-minute seminar or a 12-second clip with no belt context. The gap is a daily, usable technique — the thing you can actually try in class tonight.

This site replaces the old Substack capture flow. Same promise, cleaner signup: pick your belt, get the move.
