Closed Guard Posture Break
White
Break their spine, own their hands, and start attacking instead of holding on.
Closed guard is not a rest position. If your partner sits tall with a straight spine, you have almost nothing. The first job is to break posture — collar and sleeve, or overwrap the head — so their base collapses toward you and their hands become available for sweeps and submissions.
The steps
- 01Lock your ankles behind their back, high on the belt — not down by the tailbone.
- 02Get a cross-collar grip (four fingers in) and a same-side sleeve or wrist.
- 03Plant both feet, pull the collar to your chest, and curl your knees toward your shoulders.
- 04As their head drops, overhook the head or clamp your biceps against their ear.
- 05Keep their posture broken while you choose: hip bump, scissor, or collar choke setup.
Details that matter
- Pull with your lats and legs together. Arms alone will gas you by round two.
- If they post a hand on the mat, that hand is now a sweep handle.
- Do not open your guard until posture is actually broken. Opening early is a gift.
