Hip Escape to Recover Guard
The shrimp that keeps you from getting flattened — and puts you back on offense.
Step 01 — Frame: near-side forearm across their hip or neck, far-side hand posting on their shoulder or biceps — elbows tight, not wide.
- White
Closed Guard Posture Break
Break their spine, own their hands, and start attacking instead of holding on.
Step 01 — Lock your ankles behind their back, high on the belt — not down by the tailbone.
- White
Americana from Mount
A high-percentage shoulder lock when they turn to their side to escape.
Step 01 — From mount, keep a wide base and chest pressure. Do not sit up tall.
- WhiteBlue
Scissor Sweep from Closed Guard
The first sweep that teaches you to knock a post and ride to mount.
Step 01 — Break posture. Cross-collar and same-side sleeve.
- Blue
Knee Cut Pass
Split the guard, pin the far hip, and walk your knee through to side control.
Step 01 — From standing or combat base, get a strong cross-face or far-side collar and a grip on the near hip or pants.
- Blue
Collar Drag to the Back
Yank the collar past you, take the angle, and climb onto the back in one beat.
Step 01 — Seated, get a deep same-side or cross collar and a sleeve or tricep.
- BluePurple
Triangle from Closed Guard
Isolate one arm, climb the legs, and finish with angle — not calf strength.
Step 01 — Break posture. Control a sleeve and get their opposite arm across your centerline.
- BluePurple
De La Riva to Technical Stand-Up Sweep
Hook the lead leg, off-balance the passer, and stand up on top of their base.
Step 01 — From open guard, wrap your outside hook behind their lead thigh (DLR hook) and control that same-side sleeve.
- Purple
Berimbolo Entry from De La Riva
Spin under the lead leg, take the back, and keep your hooks honest.
Step 01 — Establish DLR plus a belt or pants grip on the near hip. Sleeve on the same-side arm is a bonus.
- PurpleBrown
Loop Choke from Opponent’s Turtle
When they turtle to hide, feed the collar and walk the loop over their neck.
Step 01 — From the front or side of turtle, get a deep cross-collar — thumb in or four fingers, knuckles toward their neck.
- Purple
X-Guard Sweep to Technical Stand-Up
Off-balance from X, stand through their base, and finish on the single.
Step 01 — From butterfly or DLR, enter X: one foot on the far hip, one behind the near knee, hips under their center.
- BrownPurple
Reverse De La Riva to Back Take
When they smash your DLR, invert the hook and climb to the back instead of resetting.
Step 01 — As they smash your DLR, turn your hook so the foot is on the inside of their thigh (RDLR).
- BrownBlack
Inside Sankaku from Leg Pummel
Pummel inside, lock the saddle, and choose heel exposure without diving at feet.
Step 01 — From half butterfly or a failed pass, pummel your inside knee across their far thigh.
- BlackBrown
Sit-Up Sweep Timing vs a Standing Passer
The hip bump is not a youth-belt move — it is a timing problem against a standing opponent.
Step 01 — From closed or high butterfly, wait for the post — hand on the mat or a heavy collar push.

Kids Guard Recovery Game: Shrimp & Frame
A playful version of the hip escape so kids learn space without getting smashed.
Step 01 — Top player starts on both knees beside the bottom player — not in a full smash side control.
